Backstory:

Jeep FWD-5-door-hatchback (aka “Patriot”), 140k miles, requires mucho shifting effort all of a sudden (it has a tru man-transmission, for those keeping score). Also, other issues, but those aren’t pertinent, other than to illustrate that it’s falling apart.

Dropped off Jeep Pieceofshit for clutch bleed this morning, now needs new master cylinder.

Coincidentally, I took the day off work yesterday to trade it in, only to be denied by dealers because I want beer on a 70% Isopropyl budget.

UPDATE : Not JUST the master cylinder, apparently! They suspect something else is worn as well.

Master cylinder should be cheap and easy to do. Sorry about your Jeep luck

Yeah, it’s not too bad, but i have to wait a day for the part to come in from Houston. Plus, in my infinite wisdom, I chose a shop next to my office to do the work... so I have to rent a car to get home tonight as well.

Just a lot of surprises, is all.

It’s... a Jeep thing?

It’s a MOPAR thing. Jeep’s pretty good when they’re allowed to be Jeep, which I guess they haven’t since the demise of the AMC I6.

I expected very little, and it has exceeded my expectation.

It’s been good to me, for the most part. I will go as far as to say it doesn’t deserve the level of hate it gets. As a toaster, it toasts. It doesn’t burn images of Darth Vader into your bread, but you can reliably get toast at about the level of toastiness you expect on the daily.

That said, it was designed by committee back in the early ‘00s, and was never expected to be the paragon of reliability. It was a holdover between the Daimler-Chrysler meltdown and the Cerberus Capital fiasco. It was meant to break Jeep into the mainstream market, and boost Jeep’s fleet average MPGs. It succeeded at both.

I drove it one-way from Oregon to Texas in 2011 with a family and 1/4 of our belongings, and it has survived to this point, more or less.

It’s a Daimler-Chrysler thing, you wouldn’t understand...

I intend to keep it that way. Seems like the safe way to go.
